March 11, 2005 Herald Alexandra E. Schencking In Loving Memory of Alexandra E. (Borys) Schencking, a long time resident of Snohomish County, who passed away March 1, 2005. She was born November 6, 1924, in Cedoux, Saskatchewan, Canada, and was the oldest of four children born to Harry and Agnes Borys. Alexandra spent her youth in Saskatchewan and graduated from the Grey Nun School of Nursing in Regina, Saskatchewan, in 1947.

She married Edward Schencking in 1948, in Regina, and later they moved to the Everett area where she was a nurse anesthetist. Following the death of Edward, in 1982, she moved to Bothell where she resided until her death. A devoted member of the of the Order of the Eastern Star she received her 50 year pin on February 22, 2005. During these 50 years of service she served as Worthy, Matron of Golden Rod Chapter in 1963 and 1995; as Grand Marshal in 1969-70 and Worthy Grand Matron in 1974-75 for the Grand Chapter of Washington, and was a member of the Welfare Committee for General Grand Chapter, during the 2000-2003 triennium. She was also active in Daughters of the Nile and Past President of the Social Order of the Beauceant.

She loved to travel and made many trips across the United States and Canada with her faithful traveling companion Samantha, her Himalayan cat. She and her husband, Ed, also traveled extensively and made many trips to Europe and Asia. Her favorite place to travel was Alexandra was full of life and full of dreams. If you knew her for a day or a lifetime you were blessed. She touched many lives with winsome smiles that drew friends and strangers alike.

Wise, witty, funny, kind, lovable and sweet she was in a class all her own. She was indeed, full of compassion for all who hurt. She is survived by her brothers, Don Borys of Ontario, Canada, and Richard Borys of Alberta, Canada; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her sister, Evelyn Ellard, preceded her in death. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m., Sunday, March 20, at the Snohomish Masonic Center, 6th Street, Snohomish, Washington.

Herald Ethel Ann Ryals She heard the owl call her Ann and she readied for her departure, and on February 18, 2005, her spirit took flight. She was gifted to this earth on August 31, 1922, to Stuart and Carrie Rose Brown. She attended school in Everett, and at the age of 18, married her one true love, Arthur Ryals, on August 31, 1940.

They later moved to Darrington, Washington, where they spent the remainder of their years. To know her was a pleasure, to love her was an honor, and to be loved by her was a blessing. Her gentle spirit, giving nature, and unselfish ways attributed to the wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, that she will always be remembered for. She has gone to join her precious ones that went She leaves behind the special few who will miss her terribly. She is survived by son, Daniel Ryals; daughter, Luana Fox; sister, Caroline Cunningham; brother, Stuart (George) Brown; sister, Helen Swilling; grandchildren, Patrick Ryals, Pam Waltari, Michelle Fox, Wendy Ryals, Todd Fox, Treesa Ryals, and Christopher Ryals; and several greatgrandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Although her body is absent her spirit lingers to comfort us and remind us of how to love each other and take care of one another, just like she always taught us. Steele Gladys Goodwin, the daughter of a pioneer, born June 11, 1913, on the plains of Saskatchewan, Canada, passed on unexpectedly, March 3, 2005, in Lynnwood, Washington. Gladys was a courageous and industrious individual who could take on anything and did, as a farmer, WW ambulance driver in England, Registered Nurse, midwife, seamstress, investor, carpenter, plumber, electrician, wife and just plain Mom. Gladys immigrated to the United States from England with her husband, John, in 1950 to start a family. Gladys is survived by husband, John; three sons, Peter, Kenneth, and Andrew; two granddaughters, Leslie Gladys Goodwin and Leah; and greatgranddaughter, Sydney.

Her family and a good cup of tea were the things she loved best. Gladys touched all who knew her. Her high sense of ethics and loyalty to family and friends were standards for others to follow. Born in Clyde, Kansas, to Charles Sylvester Dull and his wife, Emma Melinda, Goldie spent her childhood years in Clifton, Kansas. She married Herman Thomas Peters in 1945. Goldie and Herman had one child, a daughter, Sharon Ruth Peters, who died in 1973.

After the death of their daughter, Goldie and Herman raised their only two grandchildren, Karen and Kim. Goldie and her family resided in Oakley, Kansas, until 1985 where she worked as a full-time mother and businesswoman. She managed The Beacon Cafe for many years. Later she worked from home as a for her husband's employer, Siebert Sand Company, while she was a full-time mother to her two granddaughters. Goldie was dedicated to her Lord Jesus Christ, and was active in her local church.

Goldie and her husband retired in 1985 to her husband's childhood home in Octavia, Nebraska. In 1990, they moved to Marysville, Washington. Goldie has resided at Washington Oakes with her husband since April of 2000. Goldie was preceded in death by her sisters, Edna, Velma, and Dorothy; and by her brother, Leonard. She is survived by her husband, Herman; two granddaughters, Karen (Nelson) Vander Vate of Everett, Washington, and Kim (Thom) Knapp of Schuyler, Nebraska; and two great-grandchildren, Kim's son, Jeremy, and Karen's daughter, Natalie.

Hazel L. Norvell Hazel L. Norvell, age 81, passed away February 23, 2005, in her Seattle home. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; brother, Kenneth Hodges; brother, Paul Hodges; and sister, Jean Mitchell. She is survived by her sisters Ruth (Gregory) Austin and Helen Schalkeford; brothers, Ralph (Florence) Hodges and Norman Hodges; daughter, Barbara (Ken) Hynek; son, Brian (Kathy) Novell; and grandchildren, James, Andrew and Natalie.

Steele, 78, born in Outlook, Washington, on April 16, 1927, died in Everett, Washington, on March 4, 2005, from a brain tumor. Joe worked for the Fish and Game Department upon his honorable discharge from the U.S.

Navy. He managed fish hatcheries in Eastern Washington, retiring from Natches. He moved Goldendale, then to Lynnwood, to be near his nephew Joe, then on to Merrill Gardens in Marysville to be near his sister Margaret's family. We enjoyed his company very much. Joe spent the last three months at Bethany on Pacific.

A special thank you to the caregivers and nurses of Bethany on Pacific for taking such good care of Uncle Joe. You are amazing people. He is survived by his brother-inlaw, Howard Lozeau; nieces and nephews, Joe Steele, Sandi and Jim Hart, Dennis Lozeau, Scott and Becky Lozeau, Lori and Bob Crane, Jeff Lozeau, Mary Lozeau and Mark, Ed Lozeau and Vickie, Margie and Gerry Simmons; many cousins; great nieces; and nephews and friends. He died following a stroke, surrounded by family, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on March 2, 2005. One of seven children in the family, Larry grew up in this area and attended Everett schools. At age 18 he joined the army and served in Vietnam as a member of the 18th artillery unit. Upon returning, Larry began a long career as a longshoreman on both the Everett and Aberdeen waterfronts. A hard worker, active family member and proud Norwegian, Larry made friends wherever he went and loved to help others.

He was never at a loss for words. Larry leaves his wife, Rachael, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; son, John (Mary) Qualey of Aberdeen; daughter, Jessica (David) Pfeifer of Durham, North Carolina; daughter, Jenny (Bruce) Overstreet of Everett; and like daughter, Kim (George) of Grayland. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Christian, Ruby, Matt, Evan, and Caroline. He is also survived by brothers, Dick (Doris) Qualey and Hank (Tonna) Qualey; as well as sisters, Sylvia Drugge, Iva Ketchum, and Fran Harris. He alSO leaves numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She retired as an L.P.N. at Harborview after 20 years. Vera enjoyed crafts, sewing and her loving family. Vera was preceded in death by her husband, William, who passed away in 1994; her brother, Gerald Baker; and her parents, Orlando Baker and Mary Augusta (Jones). She is survived by her daughters, Cherie (Rod) Mathies of Tacoma, and Erla Rae Nelson of Arlington; step-son, Bill Speir; eight grandchildren, Jim, John and Mike Davis, Bill and Doug Mathies, Tyler Speir, Carla Donnelson, Mark Nelson; 13 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren.

She was raised in Everett with her three brothers, Dr. Victor Johnson, Edwin Johnson and Vincent Johnson. Lillian attended Everett schools and Everett Business College before entering the Salvation Army Training College in San Francisco. She graduated with excellence and later became a Captain in the Salvation Army. Lillian's husband, Rev.

Chris Ahlberg (from Sweden, as were her parents) pastored the Lake Stevens Assembly of God Church for nearly 25 years until his passing in 1963. Later she attended the Lynnwood Church of the Nazarene, moved to Everett and was a member of Bethany Christian Assembly. Lillian was always willing to help others and devoted her life to serve her Lord. She was noted for her famous Swedish coffeebread and crocheting numerous afghans for pastors, missionaries and family. Lillian is survived by four daughters, Ruth Cantley, Elizabeth Carter, Esther (Herb) Rollins, and Helen (Jerry) Oss; 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
